The Department of Bioethics at Cleveland Clinic seeks applicants for a Professional Staff position.

Detailed Description
The Department of Bioethics at Cleveland Clinic invites applications for a Professional Staff position. The successful candidate will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Staff, depending on his/her qualifications, and will be eligible for academic appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor of Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case.

We are seeking an individual with demonstrated ability to produce significant research or scholarship in bioethics. This individual should be able to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment and contribute to the intellectual life of a vibrant and diverse bioethics program. The successful candidate will dedicate 50-75% of his/her effort to independent research and scholarly activities in bioethics. In addition, this individual will participate in ethics education for bioethics fellows, medical students and residents, nurses, and other medical staff. Some service on hospital or college committees is expected, with opportunities to participate in clinical ethics consultation available to applicants who have an interest in that area of bioethics.

Building on a 25-year history of excellence in clinical ethics consultation, the Cleveland Clinic is committed to expanding its support of bioethics research and scholarship. A hallmark of the research and scholarship conducted by the Department of Bioethics is a focus on enhancing patient care. This patient-centered approach to bioethics research is evident in all aspects of the department's research, but most especially in the selection of study topics. Areas of current interest include: physician-patient communication, ethical issues in clinical research, introduction of novel therapies, genetic and genomic medicine, innovation in cardiology, reproductive technologies, transplantation ethics, ethics education, neuroethics, and best practices for clinical ethics consultation.

Cleveland Clinic is recognized internationally as one of the leading medical institutions in clinical research, education, and patient care. Over the past several years, its Department of Bioethics has grown to include 10 Professional Staff members (faculty) and many affiliated clinicians. The Department is the administrative home of the Cleveland Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics, a city-wide program to train the next generation of leaders in clinical ethics and bioethics research. Members of the Department have numerous collaborations with medical institutes at Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, and other regional institutions.

Candidates for this position must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in an area of study related to bioethics, such as medicine, philosophy, law, sociology, health services research, or medical anthropology. Preference will be given to individuals with significant prior research achievements (e.g., peer-reviewed publications or extramural research funding) or strong potential for building a nationally recognized research program in bioethics. Applications will be considered as they are received, beginning in mid February, with preference given to candidates who can start prior to July 1, 2010.
